What is vitamin D2?
Vitamin D2, or ergocalciferol, is a plant-derived form of vitamin D. It is produced by irradiating ergosterol found in fungi and plants. Vitamin D2 is important for maintaining healthy bones and teeth by aiding in calcium absorption and regulating calcium and phosphate levels in the blood.
While vitamin D2 can be beneficial for individuals with limited sun exposure or plant-based diets, vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) derived from animal sources is generally considered more bioavailable.
A research study investigated the potential of vitamin D, both in the form of D2 and D3, as a treatment for inflammatory bowel diseases. Electronic tests were conducted on participants, with some receiving doses of cholecalciferol (D3) and others receiving doses of ergocalciferol (D2).
The findings indicated that cholecalciferol showed better outcomes compared to ergocalciferol, suggesting its potential effectiveness as a treatment option. Additionally, it was suggested that cholecalciferol could be a more cost-effective approach in the medical care of patients with inflammatory bowel diseases.
Vitamins or minerals that enhance the absorption of vitamin D2 include:
- Calcium: Adequate calcium intake is essential for the absorption of vitamin D2. Calcium and vitamin D work together to support bone health. Calcium is primarily absorbed in the small intestine, and vitamin D helps regulate calcium absorption, including that of vitamin D2.
- Fat: Vitamin D2 is a fat-soluble vitamin, which means it is absorbed more effectively when consumed with dietary fats. Eating foods that contain healthy fats alongside vitamin D2 sources or supplements can improve its absorption.
- Phosphorus: Like calcium, phosphorus is involved in bone health, and vitamin D plays a role in regulating phosphorus levels in the body. Ensuring sufficient phosphorus intake can support vitamin D2's functions.
